introduction to poetry

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

oh say can you see...

... how exciting our 4th July party was?

We couldn't find stars and stripes anywhere, so I got busy with the printer and some string:

And then, of course, there was the culinary experience. Dona made spinach dip, which was gorgeous. Then we made BBQ chicken (KC Masterpiece imported via suitcase) on a makeshift barbeque grill outside, Lori made hamburgers, and we had rosemary potatoes, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, and salad.

Dessert was Betty Crocker chocolate cake (just oozing with chocolate icing) and this cake:

We didn't quite get the proportion of blueberries-strawberries right, but it's still pretty impressive!

For fireworks we have to wait until tomorrow, when Exeter city council are organising a Party on the Quay. Unrelated, but fun.

Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog. We had a firework party with our neighbors.That means that my husband and daughter started fireworks and people came and watched . . . nothing special. Your party sounds like it was a lot of fun. Your cake looks gorgeous!
